  3. OISCA participates in Samarkand Climate Forum held in Uzbekistan

4 April 2025

The OISCA Headquarters dispatched Mr. Yasuaki Nagaishi, Senior Managing Director, and Mr. Keisuke Fujii, Director in charge of Human Resources Development, International Cooperation Division, to the Samarkand Climate Forum held on April 4 and 5 in Uzbekistan. In addition, Dr. Satoshi Togashi, an expert working in that country, and Mr. Janbolat Aksetov, a OISCA trainee alumni in Japan (who underwent training at Shikoku Training Center in 2023), also attended the Forum as OISCA members.

The Climate Forum, a regular annual event, was a follow-up to the Central Asia-European Union Summit, which elevated the cooperation between the EU and Central Asian regions to the strategic level.

The participants were of the highest level: Presidents of the five Central Asian countries (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan), along with the Presidents of the European Council and European Commission, and representatives from many countries and international organizations.

During the meeting, participants discussed how the region can work together to address critical risks to sustainable development, such as the loss of ecosystems and water resources that Central Asia faces as the region warms at twice the global average rate.

The participation of OISCA in this forum was made possible at the invitation of the Government of Uzbekistan, which has drawn attention to OISCA’s efforts to prevent desertification project in the Aral Sea.

The OISCA delegation introduced the project to the Minister of the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan and other ministers at the meeting venue, where their efforts to date in Uzbekistan to combat desertification were highly appreciated. Further cooperation in the future was also requested.

Senior Managing Director Nagaishi said, “We would like to use this opportunity to deepen our cooperation with the government and contribute to the development of both countries not only through the greening of the Aral Sea desert, but also through various aspects such as agricultural development and business matching”.
