On the 21st of March, OISCA co-organized the “Green Earth Festival” along with the national Land Afforestation Promotion Organization, The Forest Culture Association, NPO Forests and Environment Network Association and Foresty Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

With an objective to celebrate the International Day of Forests 2014, the one day event held at the Umi-no-Mori (Sea Forest) Metropolitan Tokyo Bay Area was joined by at least 300 participants who are diplomats, delegates and members of the intergovernmental organization based in Japan and local Japanese participants. The celebration was ended by a less than an hour of tree planting activities of various species of seedlings by the participants.

“My father was a farmer so I am accustomed to doing activities like this. It is a great privilege to be part of this event and I am looking forward to seeing the growth of the seedlings that I have planted after three years” was the speech of Ambassador Markos Tekle Rike of Ethiopia Embassy.

The “Sea Forest” Metropolitan Tokyo Bay Area is a reclamation area which is formerly a dumping site of Tokyo that was converted into an island and is hoping to be the symbol of the recycling oriented Japan. Somehow, the “Sea Forest” will serve as a tool for the Japanese people to promote worldwide the importance of living in harmony with nature. The site is planned to be one of the venues of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
