Following the earthquake which occurred on April 3 off the Eastern Coast of Taiwan and inflicted serious damage to Hualian, Mr. Michio Hirose, Vice-Chairman of the Board, OISCA Japan, visited on April 12 the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan (located in Minato-ku, Tokyo), and handed over to Mr. Shou Shyue-yow, Deputy Representative of the Office, disaster relief donations received through OISCA.
The Deputy Representative expressed gratitude for the financial assistance pledging to make donations to help provide humanitarian aid to the affected residents.
OISCA was one of the first to promote private diplomacy with Taiwan after Japan’s breaking with the Republic of China, which had ruled Taiwan in 1972. In cooperation with the locally established OISCA Taiwan Chapter, OISCA has deepened exchanges over more than half a century, including sending to Japan of agricultural training groups and receiving visiting groups from Japan. Taiwan has provided tremendous support in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and the Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred earlier this year.
In Japan, various fundraising activities for the Taiwan earthquake are also taking place as a way to give back. Amidst the chaos of the international situation, it is hoped that the bond between Japan and Taiwan will continue to strengthen.
