  3. Visit to Fiji by OISCA Yamanashi Branch Delegation

25 September, 2024

September 25 through October 2, a delegation from OISCA Yamanashi Branch visited Fiji for observation of OISCA projects and taking part in field works. The delegation comprised 9 persons: OISCA Yamanashi Branch supporters and OISCA staff.

Based on the memorandum signed with the Fijian Ministry of Youth and Sports in 1990, OISCA started its activities in agricultural training at the National Youth Training Center, the Children’s Forest Program (CFP), mangrove planting along coast of Viti Levu Island, and coral rehabilitation.

On the first day of the tour, the visiting group attended a welcome ceremony held at the Youth Training Center. Hon. Jese Saukuru, Fijian Minister of Youth and Sports attended the ceremony in which he made a speech expressing his deep appreciation for the valuable cooperation of OISCA. Then, the group visited mangrove planting site and nursery.

On the second day, the tour group went to mangrove planting area on the Coral Coast and conducted mangrove planting activities. In the afternoon, they visited a school participating in the CFP activity and sweated with school children to plant trees.

On the fourth and fifth day, the tour participants went to Navuevu Village for observing various Fijian plants and joined a work shop of the traditional herb, Niu.

On the last day of their stay, the group members held social interchange over lunch with the Navuevu villagers.

The overall impressions of the tour participants were generally favorable. Prior to the tour, most of them were not quite familiar with the actual situation of the OISCA activities abroad. They particularly appreciated the unique opportunity of experiencing mangrove planting which is not easily available on the mainland of Japan.
